Joanna and I are back in New Zealand for the southern summer. For
us, this is the time of the year when we re-unite with family and
old friends and brush up on our Kiwi accents.
This year, about 25 or so of us - with ages ranging from not much
to 96 - will be getting together for Christmas.
At this time of the year we always feel specially grateful that
we have a business that gives us the freedom to work (or not
work) from wherever we are in the world. Just today we enjoyed a
delightful lunch with family at a local winery.
Right now we're in our favorite spot in the southern lakes area
of New Zealand's South Island. This region is famous for its
cherries, apricots and wine. On Sunday at the local farmers'
market, we sampled some of the first, sweet cherries of the
season. Somehow, the food here tastes better than food anywhere
else I've ever been.
However, I was disgusted to hear that some supermarkets are
rushing to market cherries that look beautiful but are poor
quality and tasteless. That's so dumb - risking their reputation
to make a quick buck.

In New Zealand, Joanna and I have been pleased to catch up with a
favorite cousin and find her bubbling with enthusiasm over a new
website she's building.
Although she lives a frantically busy life with work and family
commitments, she's squeezing in a few hours to write articles for
her site.
Before breakfast, late at night, and at weekends, she's busy
researching and writing articles. She's thoroughly enjoying the
challenge, because she's chosen a theme she's passionate about.
I like the approach Cousin Lizzie is taking - after doing careful
keyword research and studying her competitors, she's created
lists of high demand, low supply topics and sub-topics, all
fitting within her over-all theme. Then she scans the lists and
selects topics she knows will be easy to write about, or topics
that suit her current mood.
She's injecting her own personality into high quality, original
articles, creating a highly readable, genuinely useful resource.
As more and more junk floods online, it's pleasing to watch
someone who is adding a valuable resource to the Internet,
creating the sort of unique, useful site that Google wants to
display.
Unlike those supermarket cherries I mentioned, her site won't be
poor quality and tasteless, that's for sure.
Because I believe so strongly in the SBI! system, I recommended
it to Lizzie and it's good to see how she's enjoying it.
"It's like having a friend always there when you need it," she
says. "It warms my soul. They give really friendly helpful
advice, and I appreciate having an Action Guide to follow, with

It looks as though 2013 will be a good year for Lizzie.

#542 APn: Did you know washing machines sell well online?

Our business writer, Kate Buckland, has interviewed another
successful affiliate, who revealed that washing machines sell
well online, especially in January. Figure that out.
Washing machines, dishwashers, ovens, fridges - even lawnmowers -
are among products promoted by affiliate Kevin Middleton -
without any hard sell.
I was surprised to see that he doesn't bother much about SEO.
Kevin, who has been full-time affiliate marketing for four years,
says that to succeed affiliates need to look for a edge over
their competitors.
In an interview with Kate, he explains how he got started in
affiliate marketing, how he wasted a year going in the wrong
direction, and how his UK price comparison website has an edge
over his competitors' sites.
As they say, success leaves clues, and there are plenty of clues
in this interview.

One bit of SEO advice that must be true

The volume of conflicting advice published on search engine
optimization is ridiculous, so when I write anything about how to
get found in search engines, I try to choose my words very
carefully.
Here's something to think about...
In Google Analytics, Google shows us that it measures:
* Pageviews
* Pages per visit
* Visit duration
* Percentage of return visits
It must take an enormous amount of computing power and hard drive
space to measure and store all those facts, but Google does it.
Why? Because the Google boffins believe they're important.
If your visitors spend several minutes on your site studying your
content, visit several pages, and later return to your site,
those things are important to Google. Therefore, I think it's
safe to assume that to Google, those facts are some of the
indicators of a high quality site.
So it's worth while spending time improving those numbers.
One way I'm trying to increase the time visitors spend on
AssociatePrograms.com is by taking old articles I wrote years ago
and updating them with new, useful information. If you do this,
you should please Google while pleasing your site's visitors.

Remember Elad? He's the Israeli affiliate who lives in a home
paid for completely by his online earnings. He's been a full-time
affiliate for 9 years.

As I was saying...
I took notes during Elad's live Q&A Session.
He has absolutely astounding traffic stats - on a really good
day, nearly 200,000 visitors.
I'm a firm believer in the saying, "Success leaves clues," so I
watched the Q&A session a couple of times.
To save time for busy folk, here are my notes:
* Elad doesn't have any products of his own.
* He earns his living mainly from AdSense - says he's not very
good at earning affiliate commissions.
* He has 3 family members helping him, 1 full-time, 2 part-
time.
* On one site, his visitors have created a staggering 15,000
pages (that's NOT a typo) of articles and photos for him. These
pages attract most of the site's traffic.
* How does he encourage visitors to contribute all those web
pages? By running competitions and giving away prizes.
* REALLY IMPORTANT: If you want to encourage your visitors to
generate pages for you, you MUST choose a topic that your
visitors are ENTHUSIASTIC about. Think about that.
* He gets a lot of traffic from Google image searches. He
optimizes the photos to encourage this. Image file names match
web page names.
* His main traffic promoting focus now is using Pinterest.
* He has 3 main sites. The rest are "neglected children".
* He compares online business building to studying to get a
degree, except that at the end of three of four years you own
an online business instead of a degree.
* To make it easy to get his visitors to create those 15,000
pages of content for him, he uses Content 2.0. You can learn

During the live interview, Elad went into Google Analytics to a
page showing that more than 1,800 people were on his costumes
site right at that moment. His daily visitor number was MUCH
higher than that. He gets phenomenal daily traffic around
Halloween - just under 200,000 visitors.

This one's a REAL affiliate network

I've been updating our list of CPA and affiliate networks
Here's one of the newer additions to the list, an affiliate
network founded in Queensland, Australia, where I live. Looks
good.
This is what I call a REAL affiliate network. Unlike many CPA
networks, it provides you with a choice of MERCHANTS, not just
temporary campaigns or offers, which can quickly change.
If you're interested in promoting products to Australian markets
- which aren't as competitive as U.S. markets, check it out.

100 other merchants in categories including gifts, health and

tools and support for affiliates including data feeds, coupons, a
deep link generator, image galleries, QR codes for offline

a business and want to improve it...
Writing a review of Perry Marshall's latest book was tough work
because of the scope of the book. While Perry lives and breathes
Google AdWords, his latest instruction manual is about a LOT
more.
I was surprised by how much ground Perry and co-author Bryan Todd
cover. Perry doesn't just want to help you succeed with AdWords,
he wants to help you build a long-term, successful business. He
draws on his own experience as he describes a whole Internet
marketing strategy.
Even if you have no intention whatsoever of using AdWords, ANY
marketer will get enormous value out of this modestly priced
book, available at Amazon.
